This was a repeat of the 1998 pairing of these two adults. The clutch contained many slugs but four fertile eggs went
full term with three live hatchlings. One maroon baby died when its egg was overturned by a
clutch mate. In a strange
coincidence, both the 1998 and 2005 clutches suffered through power outages during incubation. The 2005 outage was the
result of the worst December ice storm in recorded Ohio history. Neither outage affected the babies due to the use of a
backup generator, but they did cause frayed nerves!
