The 2001 calico clutch was a high water mark for me personally, and for designer chondro breeding in general. Up to
this point, designer clutches tended to produce mixed results with a few unusual adults developing if all went well. This was the
first US clutch that I am aware of that produced such unusual looking babies across the board, and that all developed into
above average adults. I have not seen a
typical green adult that came from this clutch.
The calico trait had already been proven to be heritable in 1999 with the production of Calico Junior. I used Lemongirl
as the dam for this clutch with some hesitation after her poor showing in 1999, but she came through with a large clutch
of fertile eggs. I used vermiculite for the first time with this clutch and got a near 100% hatch rate. I have one female
keeper from this clutch that will be bred back into the project.
