About Greg Maxwell

Greg Maxwell developed a strong interest in reptiles, amphibians, birds, and Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies) at a young age. His first herp encounter took place at the age of seven when he discovered a pair of Eastern garter snakes under an old mattress in a vacant field. Despite growing up in a family of confirmed snake haters, this experience fueled a passion for snakes and snake collecting that helped to define his life into adulthood. He has maintained a collection of live snakes and other herps for most of the last forty years.

An accomplished furniture maker by trade, Maxwell expanded his business in 1991 to include his reptile cage making skills.Public interest was immediate and demand developed quickly, and by spring of 1992 he shifted production entirely to cages and started CageMaster Reptile Cages. The Cagemaster name became well-known in the burgeoning reptile industry and was one of the first successful commercial cage companies. Maxwell designed and marketed the "ChondroCondo" to accommodate the needs of his favorite new snake, the green tree python, the first commercial unit designed around the specialized needs of arboreal snakes.

Burned out and exhausted from the never-ending workload and traveling schedule of running a successful manufacturing and distribution company, Maxwell sold the business at the end of 1996. Determined to find a way to work at something he loved while still having time for God, family, and life, he gradually begin to expand his serious hobby of chondro keeping and breeding into a full-time business. No one had ever made a living by producing just this one species, and some told him it could not be done. (Telling Greg that something can't be done is pretty much a guarantee that he will do it! He was also told that nobody could make a living selling snake cages.)

Maxwell saw a real market for quality captive bred tree pythons, and an even bigger need within the community for better access to information, help for beginners, and customer service. "When I first began to attempt breeding chondros in 1996", says Maxwell, "You could not find anyone willing to give out more than light surface information, and incubation techniques were closely guarded." He set out to change that, and thanks to his comprehensive web site, the information-based ChondroForums, and more recently the publishing of the best-selling The Complete Chondro, keepers and breeders have access to all the in-depth information and assistance needed for even first-time success. Maxwell has led the way in publicly exposing the fallacies surround much of the so-called "locality" chondro market and he is an aggressive promoter of captive breeding and excellent customer service. His designer projects have produced some of the most beautiful and unusual specimens in the world.

Greg resides in Mount Vernon, Ohio with his wife of twenty-five years and his daughter. He has two grown sons, both of which are now forming careers of their own. Greg is looking forward to becoming a grandfather in February of 2006. In addition to his full-time duties as a breeder, webmaster, writer, and speaker, he is a guitar player and songwriter, an assistant to his pastor, a collector of vintage show rod model kits from the 60's and 70's, and an avid bow hunter.

Greg has a real passion for chondros...but his true treasure is spiritual. Please read the Passion Editorial for insight into this important topic.

Greg shares his passion for chondros with fellow chondroheads in Stockholm, Sweden in February, 2005.
