| This April 2001 clutch represents a new high-water mark for high-end chondro breeding. The parents are both outstanding special animals. This was the largest hatch of special morph chondros for me to date, and also was the first time I used damp vermiculite to artificially incubate chondro eggs. The hatch was excellent, with 17 of 18 eggs producing apparently healthy youngsters. When one baby died at a few weeks old, after eating well and showing no outward signs of illness, an autopsy revealed an infection, most likely from contaminated yolk. Three babies were lost before a round of antibiotics saved four others, who had begun showing symptoms. The female also had a retained egg surgically removed. It seems there is always a bullet to dodge. I held back two females from this wonderful clutch, and other babies in several other collections have turned out to be incredible animals. I am not aware of any other designer clutch that has produced the outstanding results that this one did. Most high end pairs produce a percentage of desired results, with many normal looking animals. None of the offspring from this clutch are normal. |
